What else can I do in Calcutta/India?

Apart from the wedding there's quite a bit to do in Calcutta, West Bengal and India; far, FAR too much for me to list here. The weather will be very nice in January for traveling although it will be quite cold in the mountains and the far north (Wikipedia does a good if verbose job of describing winters in Calcutta).

The Chakravorty Gardens. A sight  you will see in Calcutta

Rup's parents have volunteered to provide more information or even some options for traveling if you guys have specific places you want to check out. The Lonely Planet book/website or the Rough Guide to India are a good places to start. Once again, if you have specific questions just ask us and we will investigate and report back to you.

A few of Rup's favorite places in India are

1. Agra: You get to see the Taj Mahal. It is really breathtaking and even made Pat cry with its sheer beauty.

We are in the mid-center part of the picture. Can you see us?

 2. Puri: It's a combination seaside tourist spot and Hindu religious site. The Bay of Bengal is wondrous and the temples in Puri and the Sun Temple in nearby Konark and sights to see.

Puri: Let it just wash over  you

3. Benares/Varanasi: One of the oldest living cities in the world, Benares is a crowded, colorful, ancient, throbbing explosion of life in the heart of India. There is power there that does not sleep (but in a good way)

Oh! How I miss the resplendent chaos!

4. Kerala: Rup has never been there but "God's Own Country" is a veritable paradise of backwaters and house-boats

Again, there are way too many places to visit for us to list. But right after the wedding we will be going for a couple of days (leave on the morning of the 19th, return the night of the 20th) of R&R at Rup's family's country-house in Shantiniketan. It;s a small university town, about 150 km from Calcutta (a two and a half hour journey by train, and then a 20 minute cycle-rickshaw ride from the station to the house). We would be delighted if you wanted to join us, but we understand if you wanted to see something more...exciting.

The Country House. There will be more flowers in January
